Fractional flow calculations are just a simple guide, and there are certainly things they can’t do. Simulations, on the other hand, can offer much deeper insights—provided they are properly set up and executed. However, simulations MUST be benchmarked against known results and evaluated with common sense. In my experience, it is unfortunately common to obtain nonsense results from simulations of polymer flooding and gel treatments. This typically stems from inappropriate assumptions being built into the simulations.
